We set a date for the next evening = the romantic appointment will take place the next evening.
We set a date for the next meeting = the meeting will take place on the day we set.

Am I right?
Thanks.

I believe that a romantic inference would be better served by saying, "We set the date for the next evening." The former version works, yet it doesn't convey the same impetuosity of the meeting.

Google gives 25 hits for "set a date for the next evening", but 0 for "set the date for the next evening"
Maybe it means that young people are rather circumspect than impetuous nowadays.:)

    Thanks for the answers.

"We set the date for the next evening" sounds like you have determined what tomorrow evening's date (ie, 3 September) will be.
