"Weed" is one of many general words for marijuana in bulk. "Joint" is weed that's been formed into a cigarette. Synonyms for joints range from "a doob" (or "a doobie") to "a fatty" (a thick/big joint). Does the word "splif" help? It's a cigarette containing both weed & tobacco.

Right. And a cigar containing weed is a blunt.

I've never heard the word "weed" applied to an ordinary cigar or cigarette.

    Hello,
A minor point, and that not in AE, but I think the dictionary definition refers to "a weed" and not "weed". In BE "a weed" did mean a cigarette but still now, I think, would not refer to marihuana, as "weed" would (as pointed out for by earthmerlin).
