Sure, we had some welcome assistance. We were seldom left completely to our own devices.

In this case "welcome assistance" means assistance that we were happy to receive. In other words, the assistance was welcome to us. It does not indicate that the assistance happened at the beginning or at another just, just that it was welcome.
