    I think there is something missing or mistranscribed.

    Fairly well to do = moderately wealthy.

    but had now fallen upon evil days = is either in serious financial trouble or has other serious problems.

    I cannot reconcile the "with the last three days" to either of those comments but it means that something has happened within that time.


    Perhaps a Conan Doyle afficianado can identify the text it is from.
