Hi all, this afternoon I saw a documentary concerning werewolves, vampires and ghosts and anytime I heard werewolf word pronounced as /ˈwɛːwʊlf / rather than /ˈwɪəwʊlf /, how it should just be right according to my Oxford Dictionary ( 2010/2011).

Thank you very much for your help.

They are both acceptable UK pronunciations, according to Wiktionary. There are also three acceptable US pronunciations, the primary difference with UK being the "r" sound.

    • (UK) IPA(key): /ˈwɛːwʊlf/, /ˈwɪəwʊlf/
    • (US) IPA(key): /ˈwɛərwʊlf/, /ˈwɪərwʊlf/, /ˈwɜrwʊlf/

I grew up with weer-wolf /ˈwɪəwʊlf/, but I'm hearing ware-wolf /ˈwɛːwʊlf/ these days. Or blame it on Harry Potter: it's ware-wolf in the films.
