Hi all,

I came across this work "spank" while I was reading The Great Gatsby on F. Scott Fitzgerald – The Great Gatsby (Chapter I) | Genius :

"The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard- it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden. It was Gratsby's mansion."

Can anyone tell me the meaning of the word "spank" in this context? I feel all definitions the dictionaries provide don't make sense here.
