¿"What" como pronombre qué es?

EJ. 1.What happened to the crew?
2. What is your mame?

Mi intento en las oraciónes:
"what" es el sujeto, objeto o complemento de un verbo. Puede ser también el objeto de una preposición.

¿Entonces es?
1. "What" happened to the crew? (Sujeto, objeto o complemento del verbo "happen").
2. "What" is your mame? (Sujeto, objeto o complemento del verbo "is").

En la primera es sujeto. En la segunda me parece que es complemento del verbo to be.

Eso se ve fácilmente si sustituyes ese "what" de la pregunta por lo que sería en la respuesta:
What happened to the crew?---- That happened to the crew
What's your name?----- My name is XXX
