I read a poem by James Richardsom in The New Yoker, "Some sloppy Googling at the Vatican, and James Richardsom the soccer commentator, or the JR who builds boats, or some JR the Internet has never heard of lost out on an immortal gig: St. Jim, Patron of Apology." What is "an immortal gig"; and who is St. Jim, patron of Apology?

"Immortal gig" is a humorous way to describe being recognized or named as a saint by the Catholic Church (hence, "Vatican"). The poem suggests that a James Richardson should, has been, or will be canonized, (recognized as a saint) -- specifically, the patron saint of apologizing. Since sainthood could be said to be eternal, this job/gig/position is referred to as "immortal."

Both "Jim" and "JR" are references to a James Richardson, in this case different different people with the name James Richardson -- here, the wrong men for the "gig" since their identification or selection presumes a flawed or careless ("sloppy") Internet search.
