I saw this question in this exercise handout REPORTED SPEECH.

Change to reported questions
He asked:”What would you do if you were a celebrity?”
Answer key: He asked me what I would have done if I had been a celebrity.

According to this website CEL, "if the condition is still relevant, no changes occur. However, if it’s outdated, the past simple becomes the past perfect, and would becomes would + have + past participle."

In the case of the sentence above, can I change the sentence to "He asked me what I would do if I were a celebrity" to imply that I'm not a celebrity yet?
"He asked me what I would have done if I had been a celebrity." With this sentence, does this mean I'm a celebrity now?

  • The difference is not about whether or not you are a celebrity: the difference is about whether the situation is still valid. For example if the situation was choosing between two vacations in a game show, then that moment has gone. If the situation is about choosing which city you live in then that still applies (you could choose when he asked you and you can still choose now)

I don't fully understand your question but I don't think the sample in your text book is quite right. I would not transform the original in the way that they have suggested

"He asked what I would do if I were a celebrity" seems a better transformation of the original to me.

The text book solution has added a different dimension to the situation.
