[whatever/however] test was given

Following is from my English test.

2/ ....... test was given, our class leader managed to get good marks.

a/ whenever

b/ whatever

c/ however

d/ wherever

I would go for B, but C is also possible.

Could you please help me out.

    B is correct. Whatever is being used as a determiner, so no article is required and it can fill the blank. The other three are not determiners and would need an article (a or the) before "test" to create a complete sentence.
