Hi,
I want to ask where you were born. I know that #1 is correct but is #2 also correct?

    Both (1) and (2) are very stilted.

    You might come across "birthplace" on something like a passport or an official form of some sort, but in ordinary conversation we'd ask "Where were you born?" :)

    If this is the case, then the sentence #1 in the OP should be formal and thus shouldn't be odd. (Sorry to you and HP!)

    But that precludes it being asked as part of a casual conversation with a friend, which was more or less the context the OP gave us! :)
