when/as soon as

Senior Member
Hello! Could you help me with the following sentences? When or as soon as or both?
1) We were really surprised WHEN/ AS SOON AS he arrived unexpectedly: I'd use "When";
2) I'm really hungry! Let's go for dinner WHEN/ AS SOON AS the films finishes: for me they're both correct.
What would you suggest? Thank you very much!

    I agree with your intuitions. "As soon as" seems to introduce something that is anticipated, being waited for.
    So it seems odd, or even ungrammatical, to say "as soon as he arrived unexpectedly".
