when you cough by coughing

I am finding myself struggling with this phrase in this otherwise simple, little sentence. Would you please help me?

Original:
"Cover your mouth when you cough by coughing into your sleeve not your hand."

Mi intento:
«Cubre la boca al toser por toser? en la manga, no la mano».

The structure of the sentence is

Cover your mouth (when you cough) by coughing into your sleeve, not your hand

    Mi intento

«Al toser, Cubre la boca por meterla en la manga, no la mano» (my Spanish isn´t good enough to tell whether your version was the same or different!)

SJ, the others have already given you good translations, but the construction "do something by doing something" is translated not with por, but with the gerundio alone.

He got into the house by breaking a window.
Entró en la casa rompiendo una ventana.
