Hello.

My friend has a new puppy. She always hits him really tightly. I tell her: be gentle with him, when you hug him that tightly you choke (are choking) him

I know that „you will choke him“ works but I am asking about “choke” and “are choking”

When you hug him that tightly, you are choking him. :tick:
When you hug him that tightly, you choke him. Present tense isn't grammatically wrong, but it sounds like you're stating it as something general. When you boil water, it produces steam.
When you hug him that tightly, you will choke him. :cross:
If you hug him that tightly, you will choke him. :tick:

"Choking" is blocking the airway by squeezing. If she's hugging the puppy's neck, she might be choking it.
