1) Skyler Hamm, 12, received his first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine while being comforted by his mother, Jessica Metz, during a mass vaccination event for 12- to 15-year-olds in Albuquerque, N.M., last month.

2) Skyler Hamm, 12, received his first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine while comforted by his mother, Jessica Metz, during a mass vaccination event for 12- to 15-year-olds in Albuquerque, N.M., last month.

What is the difference between (1) and (2)?

In meaning, none. But it’s not the most natural way to say that. I wouldn‘t have added either while or while being.
