    In the Catholic Church, girls at about age 9 make their "First Communion", meaning they receive the sacrament of communion for the first time. (I assume something similar happens in other churches that have this sacrament.)

    For this ceremony, many of the girls wear white veils similar to those sometimes worn by brides. The veil worn at First Communion would be called a "communion veil," not a "wedding veil," since there is no wedding involved.
