who’s the johnny

Here are some words from the novel Lady Chatterley's Lover(page 421, chapter 18) by DH Lawrence (planetebook, here):
(background: Hilda told Mellorsthat Duncan problably would agree to be names as co-respondent, which surprised Mellors. Then Hilda said…)

‘Some men are chivalrous and don’t only count what they get out of a woman,’ said Hilda.
‘One for me, eh? But who’s the johnny?’ (by Mellors)
‘A friend whom we’ve known since we were children in Scotland, an artist.’

Johnny is likely to be man and condom. I presume the reason why Mellors chose johnny, rather than the man, is that he wanted to imply p e n i s. Is that right please?
Thank you in advance
