PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Amid enthusiasm he had never felt, Carlos Beltran did something he had never done. Thanks to him and a nine-man mound shuttle that hit its mark, Team Puerto Rico winged home on Sunday night for a World Baseball Classic date on a high.

Can you translate into plain English the whole sentence?

Does the sentence finish here? Strange.

Well : to wing home means to fly home

    Very coloquial use.

Nine-man mound shuttle: probably means the Puerto Rican team used nine pitchers, all frequently, during whatever series of games they just finished.

Hit its mark: Accomplished its goal.

Winged home: (as already pointed out) flew home by airplane

for a World Baseball Classic date: they will now be playing in the World Baseball Classic

on a high: The team was exhibilirated by their success as the returned home

So... Thanks to Carlos Beltram and a rotation of nine pichers that got the job done, Team Puerto Rico felt euphoric as the flew home for the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
