Even those classmates the teachers could recall by name proved elusive. Edwena Brunell, my kindergarten teacher, who is white and who taught at the school until it closed, scrutinized the class portrait I'd brought and shook her head. Some of the boys had done well, going on to jobs in banks or on the police force . With others , she said, it was hopeless. One boy had had a brother shot dead in a brawl.(A is for Afro, magazine)

Hi, everyone
I wonder if my interpretation of the bold is correct: in case of other boys, it's hopeless for them. Thanks

    What is your interpretation?
I tried to understand this sentence: With others , she said, it was hopeless.
And my understanding(interpretation) about that sentence is: in case of other boys, she said, it's hopeless for other boys.
