What is the differnce between work and work on? which one is more acceptable in the following sentence?

I am in charge of XX project and I have been working on this project( or working ??) for the past three months.

    Hi Bosun,

I am in charge of xx project and I have been working on it for the past three months.

This avoids repetition of the word "project".

One works on a project. For general work we say "I have been working for the past three months. Before that I was unemployed."
