is the 1st answer correct?

    I understand that it is a phrase but for us english learners it is so difficult to know this as we think that everything goes according to a rule

    had and could cannot be right so it should be "better"
    "Had better" is a standard idiom, as is "better," although used in more informal standard speech.

    From the article "You better believe it" at The Grammarphobia Blog:

    Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage calls “had better” a standard English idiom and agrees with Fowler’s that “better,” when used alone in this sense, “is not found in very formal surroundings.”
