wrecked lives

Americans had been barraged with constant images of lost family members, twisted wreckage, and wrecked lives for months. During a time when many Americans were trying to heal and get on with their lives, did we really need to see even more photos of pain, destruction, and devastation?
Does the 'wrecked lives' means 'dead person ' or 'person who suffering great pain'? many thanks.

Someone whose life is wrecked is not dead, but rather unable to continue leading a normal life: he might be suffering great pain, as you suggest, or he might have lost his job or marriage, become bankrupt, and so on.
