What is the difference between ' write' and ' write down'? Can you explain the differences with examples?

    Hi,

    They are both the same.

Can you write it for me? ( Obviously on paper or card)

Can you write it down (Down on a piece of paper or card) for me ?

But you wouldn't 'write down' an essay. I think "write" can be used in most situations, but "write down" is only for short things like your name, or the answer to a question.

Edit: Further thought - you can only 'write down' something you already know; simply 'writing' can include the creative process.

I must beg to differ with post #2. While the terms have have the same denotation, their usage is different. For example, one may say, "He writes books," but I have never heard "He writes down books" or "He writes books down."
