Hello, I'd like to know the meaning of "could ever" in the following sentence:

You are the best friend I could ever ask for.

Does it indicate a hypothetical situation and can we use "can ever" instead?

We wouldn't use "can," no. The idea is "in no conceivable situation could I possibly ask for a better friend."
