TIM KAINE: You bet, Michel. Glad to be with you.

Is it not awkward to answer "thanks" as "you bet"? Doesn't "you bet" sound like "You should be thankful, of course" and arrogant?

    It's fine, but very informal. It doesn't come across as arrogant at all. It essentially means "Don't mention it / no problem."

    "You bet" is similar to "(It was) no problem" as a reply to "thank you". Either one is saying "Of course I did you the small favor you are thanking me for."
