Ben, maybe my brain's on hold, but I can't think why anyone would want to hack an iPod (please tell me why if I'm wrong, which I probably am!). I tend to think of the usual kind of hacking! Or cracking...like when you crack software (o iPhone!).

A thing they do a lot over here is what is known as a "modifica", which they perform on various game consolles (for example, so you can use pirate games) and blocked mobiles (I mean they only work with a given operator's SIM card).

I'm helping someone with a translation of the English computer term "to hack" - the process of
(1) modifying a computer system or
(2) breaking into a computer network and modifying it or stealing information from it.

I've explained that "to hack" means "to cut" (hacking meat), and figuratively it means to "cut into" a computer/network and do something to it.

Is there a standard, acceptable phrase/word in Italian that is easily identifiable?

Craccare is widely used, but it doesn't work in every context.
If you get a bootleg programme to work without the original code for example, you can say craccare il programma.

Tim, in Italia il termine usato nel gergo degli smanettoni di PC/telefonini è craccare (o crakkare o hackerare) e chiunque capisce cosa vuol dire... se uno non lo sa gli viene appunto spiegato che craccare significa alterare il software/firmware di un pc/telefonino.

Per inciso, ritornando all'iphone/ipod, spesso si usa il termine jailbreakkare (cerca su google iphone jailbreaking). Iphone e ipod nascono da apple con firmware bloccati e immodificabili per cui teoricamente possono esservi installati sopra solo programmi commercializzati/distribuiti (e approvati) da apple.
Per potervi installare altri programmi (non approvati da apple) è necessario modificare il firmware del telefono/ipod (da qui l'articolo in oggetto).
Quindi tradurrei senza problemi "come craccare l'ipod in 5 facili mosse"

actually we Italians do use a couple of English expressions too (well, maybe not exactly english, but...)

We say: "hakkare in un computer" or also "crakkare un computer" though they're two really different things. As any Hacker would say... a hacker just hacks into a system... he tries to see if there are weak points that someone could use to "crack" that system (I think it's just an excuse, but...). While "cracking" a system would mean "to hack into that system to destroy it, for fun or other reasons".

Anyway, it's quite common to hear someone say: "quel tizio è un figo: ha hakkato nel database della NASA", or also "quel tizio è riuscito a crakkare i sistemi più efficienti e protetti del mondo".

(Also see the difference in usage of these two expressions in Italian).

Speacking we normally say "crakkare" (which is a "italian" version of the english crack) . But I have no idea how much you can use it in a formal contest and how you can write it.
with google I found (aessenet.org):

Per violare cosí il copyright del software. é necessario scaricare appositi programmi, illegali, chiamati crack."

Oh and if you want to be accurate, see the difference between "hack" and "crack"... hackers love to make that distinction... not that I'd know anything about being a hacker myself or anything...

Hackerare is undesrtood by IT folks, I'd never use hakkare (first time I've heard in my life although IT and computers are my field of expertise).

So? I've heard so many times people (around here.. I'm not saying around the world.. that would be too much) say for instance: "vorrei hakkare nella mail della mia ragazza per vedere se scrive ad altri". You may write it "hakkare" or "hackare" or how you want, but it's used. Plus, I think "hack" is a lot more used than how you show with so few results... a language is not only what happears on google.

EDIT: I wrote "hakkare" on google and found a lot more than just 2 results... how about 19.200 results?

nowadays "crakkare" is used quite often, but violare can also be used, for instance "hacking the mail account" would be translated with violare as someone managed to violate the mail server and got into your account
