You don't have to <say "yes"> <agree to do so>

Suppose that Tom needs some people to decorate his house for his birthday. He asks you if you have time to help. You pause for a while. Then, he says:

(1) You don't have to say "yes".

(2) You don't have to agree to do so.

Is it wrong say "agree to do so" as an alternative to "yes"? Thank you very much for your feedback.
