Zombie state

I'm translating a documentary about M. Jackson and there are a couple of sentences here that are causing me problems. Basically somebody is saying that M.J. did ask his doctors to supply him with anesthetics. I was wondering if the underlines sentence was correct. What does it mean? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

"No one came to him and said, do you know something, Michael, we're going to put you out. No, he went to these people and he said, doc, Give me scripts. He asked his doctors to actually gave him liquid so he would become a zombie state because he couldn't sleep."
